Gathering chestnuts, counting cars, sitting behind a supermarket cashier, packaging hardware, driving taxis – Manuel Bewarder’s struggle to make his own money as an adolescent in northern Germany didn’t lead straight to a career in journalism. Yet it provided him with a curiosity of other people’s lives. He started to write about it for local papers and continued as editor of his university’s student magazine (UnAufgefordert). In addition to graduating from Berlin’s Humboldt University in 2008, with a degree in teaching (Geography and German), Manuel worked for a newspaper (Berliner Morgenpost/Die Welt) and TV news station (N24). He is now studying at American University with a Fulbright scholarship, working towards a master’s degree in print journalism.
