Bio

Kate is graduate student at American University’s School of Communication pursuing multimedia journalism, with special interests in broadcasting and investigative reporting.  She lives in the Del Ray area of Alexandria, V.A.

A North Carolina native, She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) with a bachelor’s degree in English and concentration in Journalism, as well as a minor in Spanish (which she capped off with a summer study abroad in Madrid, Spain).  She hopes her Spanish-speaking experience will serve her well in her future journalism career.

During college, she worked for UNCG’s newspaper, The Carolinian, as an Arts and Entertainment reporter, covering the school’s various and sundry music, literary, fashion and food-related events.

She came to the Washington, D.C. metro area in 2007 and began working for a small consulting firm as a government consultant, supporting mainly training and leadership development organizations within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).  Her work there allowed her to gain and hone her skills in writing, researching, information gathering, facilitation, change management and voice-over audio recording (which she still remains available to her former employer to continue providing for online government agency training).  She also revived the long-dormant company newsletter, which she developed, wrote, edited and produced every other month.

After nearly three years, she left her full-time job behind to pursue a full-time Master's degree at American's graduate journalism program, where she was lucky enough to receive a graduate merit award and assistantship opportunity.
